About

Monica Wierzbicki is a medical illustrator and an active professional member of the Association of Medical Illustrators. Monica received her Master of Science in Biomedical Visualization after graduating at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2020. She attended Augustana College and graduated with a minor in Studio Art and Bachelor of Arts in Biology. She started out her undergraduate years in pre-veterinary medicine and painting, but eventually combined her passion for both science and art after discovering the field of medical illustration.

During her time in the Biomedical Visualization program, Monica trained with medical and Ph.D students to build a strong foundation in research, medicine, and anatomy. She cultivated her passion for art into a highly specialized skillset in illustration, 3D modeling, and interactive development in augmented and virtual reality to create scientifically accurate visualizations. Monica aims to create illustrations and interactive media to communicate scientific concepts to audiences in ways that are both engaging and informative. She aspires to use visual solutions to educate all audiences and increase their understanding of complex biomedical topics.

Monica has created anatomical, surgical, and educational material for a diverse range of clients. She is currently collaborating with renowned paleontologist, Paul Sereno, at the Fossil Lab at the University of Chicago to create a 3D reconstruction of the skull of a new thyreophoran dinosaur for her Master’s project research. Her work has been exhibited at the International Museum of Surgical Science, published in the Journal of Visualized Surgery, and used in educational material for the Field Museum. When she isn’t busy working on projects, Monica enjoys traveling and exploring new places, and spending time around animals whenever she gets the chance.
